Why Do I Feel So Scattered and Behind, No Matter How Hard I Work?

Feeling scattered and overwhelmed in Minneapolis

You’re working overtime in every area of your life. You’ve been waiting for all of the hard work to pay off, but you feel like you are further away from the life you dreamed of building.

The reality is that you feel scattered and behind because much of your effort is going toward what you feel you should be doing, or how you feel you should show up, not toward the life you actually want. Working harder can’t fix that, because more effort in the wrong direction only leaves you further from where you want to be. And effort without alignment just accelerates burnout.

The Standard You Set

Everyone creates a vision of who they want to be when they grow up and how they want their life to look. You’ve been working your whole life to get there using a metric you created long ago. Who will I be when I’m a good mother, good employee, good partner, or friend?

We hold ourselves to an impossible standard of “good,” and when life feels hard, we read it as a personal failure to measure up.

  • A good friend remembers every birthday and says yes to every request, even when she shows up completely drained.
  • A good host has the house spotless before anyone arrives, even when she’s too tired to enjoy the visit.
  • A strong woman never asks for help, because needing it would mean she isn’t managing.
  • A good parent signs up for everything and hides how stretched she is.

When you measure success using rules you wrote years ago—or absorbed from everyone else—you end up optimizing for a life you don’t actually want to live. You work overtime to maintain a standard that rewards self-sacrifice over genuine well-being.

Creating a New Metric

It’s time to let go of this unrealistic standard for measuring your worth. Defining “good” by unattainable standards will always leave you feeling like you are not enough.

To shift away from the trap of “should” and build a metric based on alignment, ask yourself these three questions:

  1. Where did this rule come from? When you catch yourself thinking “I should do X,” pause. Ask yourself if that is your genuine priority or an inherited expectation you never questioned.
  2. What does “enough” look like today? Unrealistic metrics demand perfection; functional metrics require presence. What is the minimum effective dose of effort needed right now that still preserves your peace?
  3. What are you willing to do poorly? To make progress on what actually matters, you have to intentionally let low-priority expectations drop. Giving yourself permission to be “imperfect” at things that don’t serve your core goals opens up immediate breathing room.

You don’t need to work harder, optimize your morning routine, or squeeze more into your day. You simply need permission to stop auditing your life against a standard designed to keep you exhausted.

Reclaiming Your Narrative

Changing your metric isn’t about caring less—it’s about caring intentionally. It’s about deciding that your peace, presence, and purpose are worth more than the quiet applause of living up to everyone else’s expectations. When you stop striving for an impossible version of “good,” you free up the time and emotional energy needed to build a life that feels genuinely fulfilling on the inside, not just impressive from the outside.

You don’t have to keep carrying the weight of rules you didn’t choose. Reclaiming your time and direction starts with choosing a new standard—one built for you.
